This was an unexpected surprise; we stumbled upon this cafe while looking for a quick bite to eat. A lot of locals frequent this establishment which is always a promising sign, I saw people spending their lunch break here along with friends meeting up for a meal. It is located in a smaller street across the street from the City Hall, so small that you walk past it and not really notice it.

We got sandwiches and English scones along with a pot of tea to share. Both of the people who work here were super nice and accommodating. The sandwiches were delicious, I got my sandwich on brown bread which was freshly made either in house or at a nearby bakery. We both chose cheddar for our cheese and it was a sharp and salty white English cheddar. In fact I don't think I can go back to eating the cheddar we have here now that I got a taste of the good stuff. If you don't want a sandwich, they have a small deli section with salads and dishes such as lasagna.

The scones were proper English scones, not the smaller and too sweet cream scones that are sold here. These scones are towering and plush, and they need a pat of butter and jam to complete them. They have four different flavors of scones which all looked equally divine. I wish I had got a few to go since I won't be able to find them here. The prices were very reasonable and the food was scrumptious, I'm glad we found this spot!

Made yet another special trip to Caffe Avanzo in Belfast on this trip (8 February - 12 February 2018) to stop in an enjoy amazing coffee and friendship with Gail and her staff. Not surprisingly she remembered this old Texan from last October when I spent time at her establishment. That's the customer recognition and appreciation that Gail and her staff embody. Please, please, do yourself a hugh favor and stop in to Caffe Avanzo and enjoy the company of Gail, her team, and exceptional food and beverages. You will not be disappointed. So much better than the common "chain" coffee shops. Cannot wait until my next visit.

Just lately I have taken a liking to this café. It doesn't look like much being a little overshadowed by the hairdressers up above but is rather nice and secluded from the pedestrian hurly burly of College Street near the Fountain Centre. I enjoyed a very welcome, quiet cup of coffee there one morning and returned after a day or two for lunch.

All I wanted that day was something comforting so I chose a ham and cheese toastie. It was fresh and good accompanied by salad that included beans which impressed me because there wasn't a drop of coleslaw in sight, thank goodness - I'm not fond of all that gloopy mayonnaise, in a generous enough serving and quite  reasonable at £3.75.

Other lunch options include various hot foods like pasta bake and soups. I saw someone tucking into a tasty looking slice of carrot cake while the other muffins and cakes looked tempting. The staff were friendly too, in this straightforward, comfortable café which is pleasant without the need to try too hard or charge too much.

Popped in for a quick coffee this morning while waiting  for the bank to open. Have passed it  so many times over the years  that I had to give a go and was not disappointed.  The latte was very good and the food on offer looked good but I didn't have the time to try it. Seemed friendly and popular. I like to give business to local independent cafes in preference to the big multiples.

There have been a few coffee shops in this spot and I was a regular over 10 years ago when this place was called....err...actually I forget what it was called but it was a required Saturday stop off point for lunch and coffee for a while.

Now I see Café Avanzo is the latest and perhaps greatest to occupy the spot. The layout is still the same, counter/serving area over to the left and then quite a spacious stone floored room with seating and the rest. The doors opened out onto the streets and as it was a lovely day you could almost kid yourself you were in mainland Europe.

The latte was great and the selection of tray bakes looked and smelt (kitchen out back) great. They seemed to be doing a roaring trade in sandwiches with some hearty panini's doing the rounds and plenty of content looking punters. Do pop in if you are passing.

    Pros: Friendly atmosphere, clean toilets.
Cons: Food nothing out of the ordinary.
